Yellow Dog Finds Home
Meet Willem Rocket, formerly the 'Yellow Dog' from the Harney County Dog Rescue. I saw 'Yellow Dog’s' photo on HSCO’s website while at a friend's house the evening before we adopted 'Yellow Dog.'
In October 2009, our 11 year old white Lab and her 10 year old black Lab passed away within 2 weeks of each other (the best of friends but unrelated illnesses). Although we hadn't decided to have another dog so soon, when I saw his face on your site we had to go to the shelter the next morning.
I wasn't familiar with the Harney County/Burns rescue until I read "Yellow Dog's" kennel notes. Even though I fell for him straight away, it still took me 2 1/2 hours at the shelter to make the decision to bring him home. I was uneasy about adopting an animal that had been kept under such adverse conditions and we also have an 11 year old cat who is afraid of her own shadow. One of the shelter staff offered to ‘cat test’ him in a room with one of the "bolder" cats. He passed the test, and well, the rest is history, Yellow Dog, now Willem, and the cat sleep together.
Willem was very timid the first few days and we were worried about food aggression given his previous environment but he has surpassed our expectations. He's so gentle and even though he wasn't house trained he's never had a mishap.
Willem loves to go hiking and now has 5 acres to run on and we don't care that he doesn't know what to do with a tennis ball. He'll get to that when he's ready. His coat has filled in and his eyebrow hairs are growing back. He doesn't like having his nails trimmed but he suffers through it and they'll soon be back to normal.
Thank you so much for all you do for our furry little friends, without you he might never have found his way to us. He has brought such joy to our lives and we're grateful to have the opportunity to give him the life he deserves, thanks to all of you."
